One of my different hats... an etching.

Your printmakings (I hope that's the correct term) are by far better than your other work (not that there's anything wrong with your other work. It's quite good actually.). I'd love to see more of them!

Thank you! I'll post more in the future... actually my venturing into the fan-service world has a lot to do with a portfolio crit I received.

I was told that a Director wasn't convinced that I could work in a uniform drawing style with a team, so I've been trying to take opportunites to be creative and yet show that I can. :)

I understand that, but at the same time I don't much like it. While there is a viable market for artists, I hate that they want it done their way. Art isn't about repetition. Art is about passion and doing what feels right at the time. If you want repetition, buy a Xerox machine. If you want art hire an artist... :D

Well, sometimes I do wonder if I wasn't better off just continuing down my own road... but one can't change the past or one's past actions.

I'll at least have more to pack in my portfolio. :)

I agree with you about art, but I haven't found the market that will sustain me to do what I want... and personally, I'm really tired of not being able to use my talents in the work force... and I have faith that I'll be able to continue the passion and what feels right in my free time.

Tough issues here.

Trust me, I fully understand. No one has ever bought any of my paintings (with the exception of a few cheesy landscapes) and it's irritating as hell when they look at my real work and say something like, "It's nice." or, "Oh, that's pretty". I just want to slap them and ask them if they even understand it. Makes me so mad sometimes. Luckily, there's an artists co-op here in town. I think I'll take some of my work to them and see what they have to say. I'm not looking for someone to tell me I'm good, just someone to give me an honest opinion...

Thumper, you did this by putting a piece of paper over an inked palate(or something like a piece of block), and drew it from the back of the paper, correct?

Nice dude, awesome piece

Close... the process in a large nutshell... You have a metal plate w/ a protected back, you paint asphaltum onto the plate, you use a sharpened metal stylus to draw lines into the asphaltum, then you get varying width lines depending on how long you leave the plate in acid (so in reality, you're taking it out of the bath, covering up the thinnest lines with asphaltum, and putting it back in to get thicker ones), then you remove the asphaltum, ink up the plate (wiping off excess ink w/ the palm of hand), and then take it to the press (it's simple, but process-oriented here too: soaking paper, adjusting pressure, alignment of paper, etc) and then you get a print!

Labor intensive, process-oriented, but really awesome... try it out if you can (but don't try it at home)!:)

Personally, with a work like this, I just jump into the plate w/ no pre-conceived ideas, in a stream-of-consciousness. Not trying to sound cool there, just the way I've worked w/ plates.

I see. Well, it seems you had more materials and equpitment with you to work with. :P

I did some etching pieces during 8th grade. What I did was using a wood block, put some ink on it, then put a piece of paper lightly over it. Next, I just used the pencil to draw the back of it. As for shading, I use the pencil and my finger to do it. This had to be done quick, because the ink dries fast.

Sucks I sold it to the school, or else I would have it in here. ;-;

Cool, you should try to borrow it from your school so that you can scan and photograph it. I know I'd love to see it!
